Closing the Achievement Gap: District Support through Leadership, Organization and Program Services

Alhambra Unified School District is located in Southern California and is characterized by approximately 20,000 students K-12, 65% Free and Reduced Lunch and 38% English Learners. The district has no School Improvement schools under NCLB and is recognized for its Award Winning Schools including National Blue Ribbon, Title I Academic Achievement Awards, and California Distinguished School Awards. The session will provide a district model for improving student achievement and address the areas of leadership, organization and program services as critical components for success. The use of data will be discussed. Implications for transfer of best practices to individual participant settings will be explored.

Presented by Dr. Terry Larsen, Director, Special Projects, Alhambra Unified School District

Bio - Dr. Terry J. Larsen is currently the Director of Special Projects K-12 in the Alhambra Unified School District. His responsibilities consist of state and federally funded programs including Title I, GATE, and School Improvement. He earned his doctorate at the University of Colorado, Boulder while serving as a state Title I consultant for the Colorado Department of Education. His teaching experience includes elementary, secondary, and graduate school as an adjunct professor at California State University, Long Beach. He served as a private consultant to the San Diego County Office of Education and continues as the Executive Director of Larsen Consulting Associates which addresses developmental instructional leadership training. As an active member of the California Association of State and Federal Education Programs (CAASFEP) and the National Association of Federal Education Program Administrators (NAFEPA), Dr. Larsen has served on both boards and received the “California State Leadership Award” on two separate occasions. He is the author of several articles published in professional journals and continues to support research on effective practices. As a member of the Superintendent’s Cabinet and the Superintendent’s Student Achievement Task Force, his commitment and expertise have helped ensure that procedures and programs support equity and access to a high quality, standards-based education for all students, including participation in pre-Honors, Honors, and AP classes in the district. Dr. Larsen has been a member of CAASFEP for 33 years.
